Jim, who is originally from Pennsylvania, developed an interest in farming while serving in the United States Navy. As he traveled overseas, he was able to learn about and observe the many different styles of farming in countries such as Japan and Australia. This affection that he felt toward farming and everything outdoors led him to employment with a friend's family's Southern California grape farm when he and that friend left the Navy in 1982. The family grew both wine and table grapes. Because of the strong work ethic that he was raised with, and a desire to constantly challenge himself with new experiences, he took a second job with a large industrial winery. It was through his employment at this winery that Jim met Don Johnson.

Jim and Don developed a professional relationship, and Don eventually invited Jim to visit him at Gordon Valley Farm. In 1987, Don took on 150 new acres, needed help in the vineyards, and Jim was happy to relocate to Suisun Valley in order to work with Don.

Working outdoors, particularly in Suisun Valley where the coastal influence brings a constant stream of fresh air to the environment, is only one thing about managing the vineyards that Jim loves. Growing fifteen varieties of wine grapes in Suisun Valley, where the microclimates are so diverse, creates a situation where site selection is crucial. Each variety has unique needs and provides unique results. This type of work, that is constantly challenging and rewarding, is the type of work on which Jim thrives.

Jim strongly believes that vineyard management and winemaking should complement each other, and he enjoys working closely with Winterhawk's winemaker, Matt Smith, towards their common goal of crafting outstanding Suisun Valley wine.
