Welcome!

Winterhawk Winery, located in beautiful Suisun Valley, CA, takes an artisan approach to the production of wine. Winterhawk was founded on the principles of respect for the grapes and the land on which the grapes are grown. Winterhawk’s wines are made without excessive oak, without excessive alcohol, and without over-manipulation of the yeast. The grapes are grown in their own vineyards, nurtured by their highly-qualified vineyard team; their ultimate goal for each vintage is for the delicious flavors of the grapes to be reflected in the wines.

The name Winterhawk was chosen by Proprietor Don Johnson as a way to pay homage to the Red-Tailed Hawks that live in Suisun Valley. Don purchased the property known as Gordon Valley Farm in 1977, which was already planted with grapevines. As he learned the business of growing wine grapes, he observed the crucial role that hawks play in the winter-time, when there isn’t much activity in the vineyards. They help to rid the vineyards of pests. When Don decided to begin making wine under his own label, naming his wine in honor of the hawks that have aided him in his efforts throughout the years seemed only logical. Thus, Winterhawk Winery was born.
